This unit introduces students to the nature and functions of International and Regional organizations and the networking of state interests with appropriate organizations.  The broad aim of the unit is for students to get a general knowledge of:

·        International organizations, their history and purpose of existence;

·        Regional organizations, their purpose and history;

·        The United Nations and its specialized organizations;

·        Major Treaties and Conventions and how they interrelate in diplomatic practice.

IR202 Theories and Concepts of International Relations

This unit covers various theories that attempt to explain international relations. These include both positivist and post positivist theories such as Realism, Idealism, Functionalism, Marxism, etc, and how these affect the way relations are conducted between countries.

Students will learn the importance of states in the conduct of international relations as most relations are between sovereign states. This will explain what a state is and how it identifies national interests and how these are pursued externally. Because, power determines how successful a state is in attaining its national interests, it is necessary for students to understand forms of power and how it is use in pursuing national interest. Society is always changing and its impact on our external relations is significant. Student will learn how society impacts on the options available for the country in pursuit of its national interests.

In order to explain international events and issues well, students need to learn the basic concepts and theories in International Relations.

IR204 PNG Foreign Policy
This course allows guest users to enter  
Students will study the development of PNG’s foreign policy since independence to current. The course will outline the evolution of foreign policy at independence and why there have been changes over the years to cater for the changes in focus of direction in PNG’s relations over the last decade. The study will also discuss PNG’s immediate regions of Asia Pacific and the importance of vital development partners such as Australia and others.
