TH411 Research Project: Tourism or Hospitality

The aim of this course is to complement theoretical studies with a research project and give students the opportunity to do basic research on a project of their interest within a sector of the tourism industry.
Students are expected to have collected and collated data using research tools and through fieldwork prepared in “TH320 Tourism Research and Analysis”. Students implement research methods and put them into practice through a literature review, multiple modes of data collection, data analysis, expressing the findings and making recommendations for further study. Emphasis is given to applying strategies with research that is appropriate to tourism from a regional perspective. Research focuses on management, planning and development issues within the tourism, travel, events, leisure, recreation and hospitality sectors. Students are expected to produce a publishable document that will support their presentation.
TH412 Industrial Relations and Law for Tourism and Hospitality

This unit is designed to introduce students to workplace relations and understanding the legal requirements of such relationship. As tourism organizations operate in a complex legal environment, managers must be aware of business implications of the legal requirements of operations in their industry and understand their legal obligations to guests and staff. Employee relations affect the environment within which business decisions are made, and as such the industrial relations system in PNG has many implications for the operation of the various sectors of the tourism industry. This unit will introduce students to the dynamic nature of workplace relations, with specific emphasis upon the tourism industry as a whole.

TH413 Tourism and Hospitality Services Management

This unit is designed to develop knowledge, comprehension and application of services management concepts as it applies to the tourism and hospitality industry. Futhermore, it develops an understanding of the link between operations, marketing, human resources and information systems in the service design process in tourism and hospitality enterprises and the resulting implications for management.

TH415 Events Management
Sporting events such as the South Pacific Games, National Soccer, Basketball and Softball Champions, cultural and community events, the arts and masks festivals, cultural shows, trade fairs and exhibitions are all considered to have considerable impact on the overall prosperity of Papua New Guinea.  This unit provides students with international, national, regional and local perspectives of events management.  With a focus on PNG, students examine and evaluate management, marketing, financial and operational considerations together with strategies necessary to ensure a viable event. 
TH416 Small Business Management for T&H

It also examines the general & strategic management of small businesses from start up through growth. The unit stresses the single steps to be considered for developing, planning, managing, financing, staffing, promoting & evaluating a successful business.

TH418 TRANSPORT STUDIES

This unit looks at management within the transport sector, particularly the carrier sector. It deals with the environmental (particularly regulatory) context in which carriers operate. It also deals with general principles of transportation and transport economics, strategic planning, marketing and service delivery issues, the employment of quantitative techniques in the carrier sector; and collaborative linkages between the carrier sector and other sectors of the tourism industry. Particular emphasis is placed on PNG examples and how technology has played a part in this.
