TH 213 Travel and Tour Operations.

In this unit the students acquire thorough theoretical knowledge & practical skills necessary for travel & tour operations. the distribution of tourism products and services, challenges travellers face and expectations they have, tasks & skills of travel agents and tour oprerators, as well as managing and designing tours are explored. Students practice the acquired theoretical knowkledge in the settings of firms and as tour guides for cruise ship passengers or other de facto tourists in Madang and its surroundings. Potential new itineraries in Papua New Guinea are examined and connections to the attractions & hospitality sectors are made. Teaching is by lectures, tutorials, role-plays, groups discussions, field visits, and guest lectures. Assessments my be by participation in class, assignments, class tests and final exams.

TH211 Hospitality 2

This unit futher develops knowledge and skills obtained in Hospitality 1 with a higher concerntration on operating a hospitality establishment developing skills that are important in the Front Office, Hospitality Management and the Housekeeping Department.

This unit places an emphasis on customer service and explores what it means to work with people in a variety of situations in the Tourism and Hospitality industry. Students learn techniques, skills and concepts that will assist them in managing and dealing with tourists, their expectations, requests, and complaints as well as techniques & skills that will assist them as professionals in this area. Further, students examine concepts and applications on providing quality service and customer retention. Theory lessons build the base and reference is made to examples within PNG and overseas to demonstrate the importance of customer service.

TH215 Tourism Product and Development

In this unit students look at the roles national and international tourism associations as well as governments play in the regulation and development of tourism. Impacts on environment, economy, society and culture, costs and benefits of tourism in the specific setting of a developing country, and the concepts of sustainable tourism and eco-tourism are critically analysed. Steps in the evolution of a specific tourist area are studied and the need for planning and management for tourism in general and planning methodologies and steps in the planning process for a specific project are examined. The concepts of planning and developing of a tourist project are applied in case studies. The current situation of tourism in Papua New Guinea, its impact on culture, society and environment as well as future challenges and potential strategies for Papua New Guinea’s tourism industry are reviewed. Teaching is by lecture, tutorials, group discussions, field visits, guest lectures, and field research.
