In this unit the students are introduced to the concepts and structure of the Tourism and Hospitality industry. The students acquire the knowledge and skills essential for the tourism and hospitality industry. Methods of travel, the distribution of tourism products and services, challenges travellers face and their expectations are investigated. Students acquire an understanding to the interrelationship between travel, tourism, hospitality and leisure. This unit enables students to examine the tourism and hospitality products.

TH112 Busines Comunication for Tourism and Hospitality

This unit gives students the opportunity for a concerntrated period of writing, researching and communicating for their own personal and professional development. it will help them to express themselves with more sophistication and accuracy, skills they can then transfer to their working environment. The unit is designed to provide an understanding of the role and importance of communication within the tourism and hospitality organisations. To this end, students are introduced to a range of communication tools, theories and concepts applicable in service-based industries. The dynamics of interpersonal, group and organisational communication as well as attitudinal and motivational factors affecting performance are examined.

Mini-workshops and individual and group exercises will encourage students to practice and improve their own communication skills. Students will be required to evaluate their own work and other students work. Tutorials will also be offered to provide feedback on students work.

TH113 Hospitality 1

This unit introduces the students to the Hospitality sector, its sections, surroundings and developments. The hospitality industry within Papua New Guinea and on an international level is examined with special attention to guest profiles, relations to attraction sites and new developments. Students are introduced to the operations of a hospitality business/establishment and acquire skills required in Occupational Health and Safety, Food and Beverage, Cookery, Function service, Catering and Event Management in both practical and training sessions. Teaching is by lecture, tutorials, role-plays, group discussions, field visits, guest lectures, and practical training sessions.

TH114 Tourism Products in PNG
This course requires an enrolment key

The unit aim is to provide students with the general knowledge about the various tourism products in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the various areas of their country to enable students to answer many of the questions that tourist might ask about PNG. The unit address general needs and wants of tourists and the type of products that respond to their requirements. It also looks at the various steps which need to be taken in developing and maintaing tourist products. Topics such as PNG's history, nature, culture, legal system, political system, etc. are studied. Teaching is by lecture, tutorials, group discussions, field visits, guest lectures and project presentations.
