This unit examines quality management practices and the conditions that enhance successful quality improvement initiatives. Consideration will be given to quality standards and quality assurance activities in the service industry. Resources, infrastructure and tools necessary to ensure quality of health care in PNG will be discussed and evaluated. Implication of its introduction and how organisational culture and employee attitude affects quality outcomes will be also discussed.  The unit should enable students to have a general understanding of quality improvement practices and problem solving techniques.

HM402 Contemporary Health Issue

This unit examines the psychological dimension of physical illness, health, and health care. There is a strong focus on health psychology in a Melanesian context with particular emphasis on cross-cultural health-related issues. The unit examines definitions of health and health psychology; the role of health psychology; the determinants of health behaviours (e.g., cognitive, attitudinal, motivational, personality, social, developmental); stress, illness, and coping; pain and pain management; chronic and terminal illness in childhood and adulthood.Psychological approach to addiction: Smoking, alcohol & other drugs; disability death, grief and terminal care; Sexual dysfunctions and disorders

HM403 Working with the Media

Health professionals are increasingly called on for comments or information by the media. At the same time, they are in a key position to work proactively to increase the public’s understanding of health issues, using the media as a vehicle. This unit will give health managers an understanding of how the media operates, and the skills to work in a confident and co-operative manner with journalists. Students will gain knowledge of what issues are most appropriate and beneficial to pass on to the media. They will also learn to handle the media during a health crisis.

HM404 Project Planning and Design

The aim of this unit is that the student will, as a team, design a project and prepare a project proposal to assist the district of a fictitious country to reduce, eliminate , eradicate or address a specific health problem and the associated morbidity and mortality. The project should intend to improve the health of the population of the district. The student will be able to do a situation analysis, project rational and options considered, project description, benefits or impacts, resources and costing and organization and management of a project.

This unit is a continuation from project planning and design HM414. It covers project monitoring and evaluation. The student will learn how to use the logical framework approach to summarise the assumptions and risks that will affect the outcome of a project. They will also determine the feasibility of a project and whether the project activities can be sustained after the life year of the project..
