| Epidemiology The students will learn the Definition and Evolution of Epidemiology from Study of Epidemics to present day Public Health tool, that is used to control, prevent, treat and cure diseases in the population. The students will have a clear understanding of the four phases of Epidemiology: Descriptive,Analytical,Experimental and Evaluative Epidemiological methods. They will develop skills to apply epidemiological methods to prevent and control diseases and to investigate Epidemics in Papua New Guinean context. They will learn to measure the health status of the population using Rates, Ratios and Proportions; to calculate various Morbidity and Mortality Rates; to use the sensitive health indicators such Infant Mortality rate and Maternal Mortality Rates and assess the health status; they will have an appreciation of the correlation between low per capita GNP and poor health indicators in a country. The students will learn the extent of Public Health problems according to Place, Person and Time (Where/Who/When) and will be able to identify “at risk population” for Endemic and Epidemic Diseases. They will learn to prevent, control and treat diseases prevalent in Papua New Guinea. They will acquire understanding and skills to carry out Descriptive, Analytical, Experimental and Evaluative Epidemiological studies. To sum it, the students will learn to use Epidemiological tools in their day to day work at rural health facilities as a means to improve the quality and delivery of health care services. |
