Occupational Health and Safety is a broadly based review of the nature of hazards in the occupational environment and how the risks of injury or disease as a result of exposure to these hazards may be minimised. Students discuss a wide range of occupational illnesses such as those affecting the respiratory system, nervous system, kidney, reproductive system, musculoskeletal system and occupational cancer. This unit places specific emphasis on competencies needed to improve safe working practices and a safe and healthy environment, while maintaining and optimising opportunities for employment and productivity.

EH307 Civil and Disaster Management

This course is about Civil and Disaster management. It deal with the natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, flooding, landslides, tropical cyclones,droughts,frost,tsunamis,epidemics fires and to some small extent to oil spill. The students will be able to understand the terms used in the course and also understand the National Disaster Organization Objectives . The National and provincial Disaster Committee functions and special responsibilities of Government departments and other agencies involved in disaster . Know the procedures in processing the disaster victims and understand each known hazards from specific disaster. Understand also the National Communication Plan and the strategic plan for the provinces and districts of PNG prone to disaster.

Moreover, students explore and analyse the complex issues associated with providing occupational health and safety services in the workplace. Multitude of factors has complicated the role of clearly defining the cause(s) and effect of occupational diseases, injury, within a workplace environment. The multitude of factors include, chemical, physical, and biological hazards which employees are exposed to. Students will practically conduct audit of industries in Madang and apply their knowledge to prevent and manage hazards and risks within the industry they have visited.
