This unit introduces students to the concept of proof, by studying sets, numbers and functions from a rigorous viewpoint. These topics underlie most areas of modern mathematics.

The unit introduces the basic ideas of complex numbers relating them to the standard rational and transcendental functions of calculus. The core concepts of limits, differentiation and integration are revised. Techniques for applying the calculus are developed and strongly reinforced. Vectors in two and three dimensions are introduced and this leads on to the calculus of functions of more than one variable, vector calculus, integration in the plane, Green’s theorem and Stokes’ theorem.

This unit introduces the student to computer architecure, design and computer programming via a rigorous treatment of the algorithmic process.

The unit is an introductory unit in the geometry of two and three dimensions. It develops the theory of curves and surfaces in space with a minimum of Calculus and Vector Algebra.
